Monday, 24.11.2014, 6:00 pm, Studio Museum

Meaza Ashenafi was born 1964 in Assosa, Ethiopia. At the age of 17 she began her studies at the Addis Ababa University. Her educational background covers a wide range of areas with a main focus on Law, International Studies and Gender Studies. In 1986, she was the only woman who graduated from Addis Ababa University with an LL.B. degree in that year. She also has an M.A. in Women’s Studies from the University of Connecticut. After her graduation she first worked as a high court judge before she became a legal advisor to the Ethiopian Constitution Commission of the Interim Government, which drafted the country’s first constitution after many years of civil war. In that position, she was able to effectively advocate women’s and children’s needs, which were ultimately incorporated into the Constitution. As an unwavering advocate for gender equality, Meaza produced the first drafts of the constitution’s articles on the rights of women and children. In 1995, she co-founded the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association (EWLA), the first and only one of its kind in Ethiopia, of which she is still the Executive Director. EWLA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the political, social, and legal rights of women. It also established a free legal aid program for indigent women whose rights have been infringed upon.

EWLA’s pioneering work was nationally and internationally recognized for its effectiveness - for waging an effective campaign, bringing about law reform, and, more significantly, for putting women’s issues on the national agenda. In 2011 Meaza together with 11 other Ethiopian women teamed up to create a bank that is focused on empowering women financially. They established the first Women’s Bank (Enat Bank = Mother Bank), which is expected to improve access to financial services to women and women entrepreneurs and to have an impact on the perception and reality of women’s status in the country. Since 2012 she works as a Women's Rights Advisor for UNECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa), where she identifies and develops new and emerging areas of conceptual analysis to promote and protect women’s rights in Africa. Besides her involvement at the ENAT Bank and UNECA she continues to provide free legal aid to indigent women victims of injustice down to the present day.
