Film: Der Jungfrauenwahn
Her interest in this topic also applies to her as an author. In September 2008 her debut novel Arabboy – Eine Jugend in Deutschland oder das kurze Leben des Rashid A. was published. In this novel Balci deals with her own experiences with youngsters in different socially deprived districts of Berlin. In the year it was published, the novel was staged in various theaters in Germany and abroad. Her second book ArabQueen or The Taste of Freedom describes the life of Mariam, who comes from a strict Muslim family. Compared to her brothers, Mariam has almost no liberties, so that she leads a double life between these cultures.
In December 2015, her film Der Jungfrauenwahn (Madness of Virginity) was shown on arte and awarded with the Bavarian Television Award in 2016. In the opinion of the jury Balci managed “to support the freedom and self-determination of women and at the same time to safeguard the protection of privacy, and to demand prerequisites for a modern and contemporary society of different cultures”.
Balci is a founding member of the Muslim Forum Germany, established in 2015.
