Mirjana Karanoviæ
Film: A Good Wife

In addition, she acted in the award-winning films Das Fräulein (a.o. Grand Prix at the Locarno Film Festival) and Here and There (a.o. Critics Prize as Best actress at the Belgrade Film Festival).

2008 she was honoured with the renowned “Winning of Freedom Award” that is bestowed upon women who advocate for human rights, rule of law, democracy, and tolerance in society.

Karanoviæ’s directorial debut A Good Wife, where she is also the lead actress, had its premiere at the Sundance Festival in 2016, and was nominated there for the Grand Jury Award. In the film, her character Milena lives through, as an individual, what Serbia has gone through as a whole country, about ten years ago. Back then, images were shown on television that documented how Serbian paramilitary of the unit Skorpioni killed Bosnian civilians. When she saw these images, Karanoviæ thought about the women and relatives of the victims, and what they might feel when they saw this. “Then I asked myself what experiences a woman now who sees how her husband or brother commit murder.” The actress says she couldn’t get these images and thoughts out of her head, and she can’t forget that the videos aroused the Serbian public only for a short time.

“How could I live in a country without dealing with certain topics? Because politics are certainly a big part of our life!”
