Rita Baghdadi, USA / Lebanon, 2022, 78 min., documentary, OmeU
Lila and Shery are co-founders of the Middle East’s first women’s metal band, »Slaves to Sirens«. Seeing no chance of making a career as professional musicians in Lebanon, they dream of concerts abroad. When a performance at a British music festival does not prove to be the turning point they had hoped for, they fall out. An affair within the band, the political unrest in Beirut, and the resistance the women face relentlessly further complicate the situation. By focusing on the motivation as well as the (inner) conflicts of the individual female musicians, director Rita Baghdadi succeeds in creating an intimate closeness. Not least because of this, SIRENS became an internationally successful festival hit, screening at the renowned Sundance Film Festival, among others.
