Vivas nos queremos – We want to live! – is the cry at demonstrations by Mexican activists who no longer want to tolerate femicides in their country. According to official figures, more than 2,000 women are murdered there every year for gender-specific reasons. For example, 12-year-old Fátima, who was intercepted, abused and murdered by three neighbors on her way home from school in 2015. Or 13-year-old Renata, who was killed by her mother’s ex-partner in her own home. The mothers of the two dead girls have since been involved in feminist collectives, demanding that the government take action to ensure a life free of violence and femicide. Director Angélica Cruz Augilar is very close to the mothers’ struggle and shows how important their commitment to women’s rights is.
