When scientist Joy Buolamwini is not recognized by the face recognition software because she is a woman and black, she starts to do research on the neutrality of artificial intelligence and finds that AI reproduces existing prejudices in society. This phenomenon is called “coded bias”. The programmers – mostly white and male – unconsciously insert existing inequalities and discrimination mechanisms into their algorithms.
Misidentification through AI software is part of our everyday life: unjustified arrests, incorrect evaluation at work or no admission to one’s own home. In CODED BIAS scientists and activists show us how important it is to talk about fair algorithms.
