Mehrdad Oskouei, Iran/Norway, 2019, 74 min., documentary film, OV with english subtitles
Iranian women suffering violence by the hands of their fathers and husbands often see the homicide of their oppressor as the only way to end their suffering. SUNLESS SHADOWS accompanies a group of girls and young women who are in prison for that very reason. The documentary provides an insight into the everyday life of these imprisoned women. Their lives are marked by pain, regret, and also a surprising amount of happiness and relief. Particularly the intimacy of these young women, united by the same fate, is captured in a touching way. The film raises questions about justice and freedom in a patriarchal system.
