Medusa

Anita Rocha da Silveira, Brasil, 2021, 127 min., feature film, OmeU

According to Mariana’s religious community, a woman has to be beautiful and well-adjusted. During the day, she and her friends admire a group of young militiamen as they exercise; in the evening, they idolize the charismatic preacher. As soon as it gets dark, they cover their faces with a white mask and hunt down free-spirited, »impure« women. They beat them up and force them to confess that they have deviated from the »right path«, a procedure which they then spread on social media. MEDUSA celebrates its premiere in Berlin. With synthpop underpinnings and stylized images, director Anita Rocha da Silveira unfolds a dystopia about beauty norms and misogyny.
