SUNSHINE

Antoinette Jadaone, Philippines, 2024, 92 min., feature film, Filipino with English subtitles

Young gymnast Sunshine is on the verge of being accepted into the Philippine national team when an unwanted pregnancy threatens her big dream. While searching for illegal abortion pills, she encounters a mysterious girl—her own doppelgänger—who forces her to confront her fears, hopes, and decisions. Another pregnant girl, abused by her uncle, is also haunted by a ghostly mirror image. In the streets of a Philippine city marked by poverty, violence, and arbitrariness, both struggle for self-determination and the opportunity to decide their own lives and futures. A powerful work about trauma, resistance, and the dream of finding one’s own path.
