MANAS

Marianna Brennand, Brasil / Portugal, 2024, 106 Min., feature film, original with English subtitles

Thirteen-year-old Tielle lives with her family on the island of Marajó in the northern Brazilian Amazon region. Her life still seems carefree, but rigid traditions prevail in the small community: men go hunting, women bear children, and above all, faith in God reigns supreme. However, cracks are beginning to appear behind the seemingly idyllic facade. Why are pages in the biology books stapled together? Why does a classmate suddenly show up to class pregnant? And where did her best friend suddenly get all that money? When Tielle’s father takes her hunting one day, her childhood comes to an abrupt end. From now on, she has only one goal: to escape from the island. A cargo ship off the coast seems to be the path to freedom—but this dream comes at a high price. Tielle experiences patriarchy in all its brutality—and courageously stands up to it, not only for herself, but also for her younger sister.
