Nine-year-old Arushi and 21-year-old Milena train in Kalari, one of the world’s oldest martial arts, in India. What begins for them as training and discipline becomes a way to carve out their own space in a society shaped by traditional gender roles and gender-based violence. Dr. Binny, a historian at Kannur University, is also an advocate for women’s rights and greater self-determination. KALARI KID follows the three women in their daily lives and shows how differently their struggle for a self-determined life can look. A film about women who follow their own visions and empower one another to determine their own place in society.
