Day after day, Maikhuu drives her truck through the Gobi Desert. She is one of the few women working in a male-dominated industry. A single mother, former taxi driver, and hairdresser, she transports coal along dangerous roads all the way to the Chinese border. In long convoys, the drivers often wait for days before they can continue their journey. The mining boom has fundamentally changed the landscape and people’s lives: Dust, drought, accidents, and fierce competition shape everyday life along the coal routes. Over the course of six years, Khoroldorj Choijoovanchig has followed Maikhuu, weaving her personal story with an examination of the social and environmental consequences of “Minegolia”.
