VENA

Chiara Fleischhacker, Germany, 2024, 116 min., Feature film, OmeU

Jenny is expecting a child, but her joy is overshadowed by her crystal meth addiction and the threat of a prison sentence. Her relationship with her partner Bolle also suffers from her drug addiction and conflicts with the law. When they are assigned a family midwife, Marla, Jenny is initially suspicious of her. But slowly Marla gains Jenny’s trust and helps her to realize that she must take responsibility for her past, her future and the new life inside her. VENA tells the powerful story of a young woman fighting for a better future for herself and her child despite difficult circumstances, and of a justice system that is not designed for mothers. Chiara Fleischhacker impressively illuminates the structural disadvantages and challenges of becoming a mother.
