Smoke Sauna Sisterhood

Anna Hints, Estonia / France / Iceland, 2023, 89 min., documentary, OmeU

In a remote wooden cabin deep in the snowy forest somewhere in Estonia, women meet to take a sauna together. Taboos fall with the covers. Soft voices whisper hitherto unspoken fears and sorrowful insights into the protective darkness of the sauna filled with smoke and steam. Caught up by the quiet listening of their companions, the women tell of first loves, but also of traumatic experiences such as sexual assaults. The sauna is transformed into a place of feminist self-empowerment. The documentary, which seems almost mystical in its intimacy, tells of all the changes that take place in a woman’s life and body over time.
