Unruly

Malou Reymann, Denmark, 2023, 134 min., feature film, OmeU

In 1930s Denmark, Maren is sent against her will to the notorious women’s asylum on the island of Sprogø for alleged indecent behavior. The demand: she should learn to behave like a “decent young woman”. Maren, however, steadfastly refuses and does not follow the rigid instructions of the repressive system. Her stubbornness has serious consequences for herself and for her roommate Sørine. The stylishly staged Danish debut UNRULY draws on real events and tells with remarkable sensitivity of a courageous struggle for female self-determination. In the process, it sheds light on a dark episode of Denmark’s past.
