Denmark, shortly after the First World War: Karoline works in a textile factory and waits in vain for her husband to return from the front. Believing him to be dead, she falls in love with the factory owner and hopes for a better life. However, her happiness is short-lived. Pregnant and abandoned, she is cast out onto the streets and quickly falls into poverty. Even her disfigured husband, who returns later, offers no support. After a failed abortion, she finds refuge with Dagmar, who arranges for unwanted babies to be placed with wealthy families. Trusting Dagmar, Karoline relinquishes her child and begins working as a wet nurse. However, behind this apparent charity lies a sinister operation. With expressionistic visuals and a powerful performance by Trine Dyrholm, director Magnus von Horn crafts a drama based on true events.
