Twice Colonized

Lin Alluna, Denmark / Greenland / Canada, 2023, 92 min., documentary, OmeU

Renowned Inuit lawyer Aaju Peter has spent her life courageously fighting for the rights of her people. Brought from Greenland to Denmark against her will as a child and forcibly assimilated, she lost her native language and lost touch with indigenous culture. In adulthood, she sought refuge in Arctic Canada, only to see the shadows of colonial oppression there as well. In TWICE COLONIZED, she embarks on a journey to reclaim her language and culture and give future generations a future different from the one previously mapped out. The documentary impressively shows how the effects of colonization continue to shape many people today, and that Aaju Peter’s struggle is of universal significance.
