Amal doesn’t just carry “hope” in her name. In her class at a Belgian suburban school, where the majority of pupils are Muslim, she uses modern literature and poetry to promote tolerance and enhance the critical awareness of her pupils – a class that is often divided in its views.
However, her hopeful commitment is not without consequences. Amal increasingly becomes a challenge for her Muslim colleague. When her student Mouna comes out as lesbian and faces bullying from her classmates, the Muslim community increases the pressure. Amal bravely stands by her side, determined to protect Mouna. But her efforts make her the target of Islamist hostility herself.
