1971, Francoist Spain: María lives in Galicia and earns her living by fishing, working as an obstetrician and performing illegal abortions. After she tries to help a young woman with an unwanted pregnancy, she is targeted by the authorities and has to flee. On her dangerous journey to Portugal, which takes her along old smuggling routes, María experiences the solidarity of other women who stand by her side. With their support, María tries to find freedom. The film’s director, Jaione Camborda, is the first female director to be awarded the main prize, the Golden Shell, in the 71-year history of the renowned film festival in San Sebastian.
